Today's Bargain

The weather was a lot brighter today, still very cold and breezey but we had sunshine and that always makes me feel more positive.

Since I hurt my leg about a week ago (I think it's what they call shin splints and is usually caused by over-exercising, but in my case caused by a long, brisk walk in new boots) I'm having to take it easy and I can't walk as far as I'd like without being in discomfort. I'm champing at the bit for it to improve as I'm very much a strider not a saunterer when it comes to walking and it's driving me crazy having to walk so slowly. It has improved a little with me trying not to do too much, but I can't wait for things to be completely back to normal.

So today's outing was another slow stroll into town and back (about a mile and a half round trip on flat ground). I'm glad we went though as a quick look through the sale racks in M&S produced a lovely pair of smart work trousers for DH for £12.50. My dearest one is only 5ft 4 with a 29in inside leg and a 36 in waist so it can be a bit of a problem sometimes getting trousers to fit him and usually impossible in the sales or charity shops. As you can imagine I was really pleased that we lucked out this time.

That's about it for today. I'm just off to cook that almost-roast I talked about yesterday.

  1. Glad you had a nice Christmas .. but sorry to hear about the leg .. hope its not too painful. I like to read bis about your slimming journey .. you have done really well .. I am struggling .. always struggling with my weight .. I wish there was an easy answer. Did you use Slimming World? I'm thinking I should go back and try it again.

    1. Hello, Vicky, how lovely of you to join me and leave a comment. I've also always struggled with my weight. It's still a stuggle now between my natural piggy tendencies and the desire to stay slimmer and healthier now I've managed to get to a decent weight. I did use Slimming World and still go to meetings regularly to keep things in check. I found them much better than Weight Watchers who I'd lost with before. It took me over 2 years to get to my target weight, losing nearly 5 stone, but then the first 3 stone came off within a year and it took me another 18 months to get the rest off. I think it gets harder as you get older, plus when you follow an eating plan for any length of time you get complacent and not quite so strict. I'm finding it difficult to maintain at the moment with the weather so cold and the dark, damp days not encouraging me to get out so much. I tend to eat more of the things that I shouldn't especially when I'm tired, fed up or bored. I think the main thing is to not give in completely, to pick up and give it another go if you fall by the wayside...at least that way you minimise the damage. I really, really hope I never let my weight get so out of control again as my health is so much better now. Good luck if you decide to give it another try.

  2. I hope your leg heals soon.

I also commiserate with your trouser problems for you dh. My dad was 5'5" at his tallest and his shape is genuine Santa Claus. To compound his problems he had polio so even shoes are a drama. Fortunately his father was a tailor and he taught my mother how to fix his trousers but it is a job she hates to do. He now as dementia and we have resorted to braces to keep those pants in place.

    1. My leg was feeling much better for most of the day but is aching again this evening. When we were first together I would even hem by DH's jeans... a 3 inch hem on jeans wasn't cool but there wasn't the choice of leg length back then (35 years ago) that there is now so he had to put up with it. Sorry to hear that your dad now has dementia, but I had to laugh at the braces comment. DH hates braces so I'm hoping it never comes to that for him.

    1. Thank you, Bridget. It was feeling much better while we were out today, but is hurting again this evening. I probably did a bit too much walking because it wasn't feeling so bad. Note to self...it will heal quicker if I can make myself take it easy for a few days!
